Iowa State University
Located just 30 miles from the Best Western in Williams, you will find this Agricultural College. The Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, the nation's first land-grant college, opened its doors in 1868. Its first class of 26 students graduated in 1877. The college was renamed the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1898, and became the Iowa State University of Science and Technology in 1959. The purpose of the college was to give the sons and daughters of the working farmer an education that had been denied to women. Higher education had traditional. Today Iowa State's aspiration is to be the best university in the nation in fulfilling its land-grant responsibilities. The accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff demonstrate that we're making great progress toward that goal. Some are noted in photos on the cover and others are highlighted throughout the brochure. Call 515-294-4111 for more information.
Slayton Farms Round Barn
This original farmstead features one of the few clay tile round barns in the area. The barn was constructed in 1914 by Johnson Brothers Clay Tile Works of Fort Dodge and is distinctive of Iowa dairy barns, although the construction is unique. In 1999, the barn was named to the National Register of Historic Places. It was also identified as one of the 11 most endangered historic properties in the state; the barn was later purchased by the Hardin County Historic Preservation Commission in 2001. Today the barn is being restored to serve as a working milking barn and farm museum upon completion. Call 641-648-4570 for more information.
