Iowa, The Tall Corn State, central in America's heartland as well as America's corn belt. Iowa has also been called the food capital of the world because of its agriculture and associated industry. No need to sit and watch the corn grow, Iowa offers residents and visitors a whole variety of entertainment and activities.

Iowa is enthusiastic about sports, in particular its home teams. The Iowa Hawkeyes are at the top of the list. With men's and women's programs in fourteen sports, there is likely something on the schedule nearly all year long. The University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, is also a hub of culture and center for art and learning in Iowa. Iowa City is one of three global cities named by UNESCO as a City of Literature.

Des Moines, the state capital, is the largest city in Iowa and host of many exciting events. Home of the Des Moines Metro Opera, the Des Moines Symphony and a number of outstanding venues, visitors will find outstanding events for every taste. The downtown Simon Estes Riverfront Amphitheater hosts Nitefall on the River during June and July. This is a Thursday night concert series featuring well know local and regional performers. The Amphitheater also hosts general concerts. Music fans note that Colbie Caillat with perform in June will be in concert in July.

Athletics are also a high priority in Des Moines. Easter Lake is the site of April's Run for the Egg, a fun family event with an egg grab and other fun kids activities. The Mayor's Annual Ride for Trails is mid-April. The ride features a 10 mile family friendly route as well as more challenging 20 and 30 mile options. Hoopin' at the Dome is a 3 on 3 basketball tournament held at the state capital. The 2010 event will be in May, with adult and youth division breakouts, and no dunking allowed, come out and give it a shot!

Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in Iowa, and serves up a wealth of events and activities. The 2010 National Horseshoe Pitchers Association World Tournament is in Cedar Rapids. Held in July and August, all events will take place at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The 2010 Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival starts mid-June and ends the fourth of July. A full schedule of patriotic concerts are on tap, with the Celebration of Freedom Fireworks show to end the festival. There are two weeks of fun events for all the family.
