Devonian Fossil Gorge
Historic floods from the summer of 1993 surged over the emergency spillway and eroded a 15-foot-deep channel, exposing the underlying bedrock. Visitors can walk over acres of Devonian Age sea floor and get a firsthand look at fossils normally hidden from view. Visitors Center is open 8am - 4pm weekdays; 9am - 4pm weekends Memorial Day -Labor Day; 8am - 4pm weekdays during winter. Gorge is open dawn to dusk, year-round. Museum of Art
One of the country's most important collections of African art serves as the museum's centerpiece. Museum of Natural History
Three major galleries focus on natural science and natural history of Iowa and the Midwest. Newly remodeled Hageboeck Hall features more than 1,000 birds. The Mammal Hall displays nearly every order of mammal from aardvark to zebra, including a 48-foot skeleton of the rare Atlantic right whale. Spectacular dioramas in Iowa Hall lead visitors on a 500-million-year adventure through Iowa's past. Plum Grove Historic Home
This is the home of Iowa's first territorial governor, Robert Lucas, and his wife, Friendly. The seven-room Greek revival house has been restored with pieces representative of the 1844-1853 period, when the site was home to the Lucas'. Items found during the archaeological excavation of the surrounding grounds are also displayed. Open 1 - 5pm Wednesday - Sunday Memorial Day weekend - October 31. See our two galleries featuring the history of the health sciences at The University of Iowa and temporary exhibits.
